ASI
Artificial superintelligence: AI that would greatly outperform the best humans at nearly all intellectual tasks.
ASI stands for artificial superintelligence. It describes an AI system that would far exceed the best human minds across almost every intellectual area, including science, planning, persuasion and the design of new technology. It is a step beyond AGI, which is usually defined as roughly human-level ability.
The term is used mostly in discussions of long-term risk and possibility. If such a system could be built, it might solve problems people cannot, but it might also be very hard to oversee or to switch off if its goals differed from ours. That is why many safety researchers focus on it, even though it does not exist.
Opinions differ sharply. Some think ASI could arrive within decades and want serious preparation now. Others think it is too speculative, or that it depends on assumptions about intelligence that may not hold. In practice, the terms ASI and superintelligence are used almost interchangeably, though some writers reserve ASI for a system that has been actually built rather than the general idea. No one has a reliable forecast for whether or when it could happen.
